The Centre of São Paulo

São Paulo / Brazil, a city of superlatives with approx. 18 million inhabitants.

Morumbi

It is South America’s main center of commerce and production.

Practically every international company has a branch office in Sao Paulo.

Therefore Sao Paulo is also called the biggest German industrial location.

Favela in Grajaú

but ...

on the outskirts of Sao Paulo a large part of the population lives in slums
called Favelas.

The slums located on the edges of bigger Brazilian cities or in the hills there are called Favelas.

Usually the areas where Favelas are located are not attractive for ‘normal’ building development.

In former times Favelas were huts built of box-wood, old canisters and palm leaves.
Today, especially in bigger cities, stones and wooden boards are used as building materials.
The first Favelas were built by migrants who moved to the big cities. The number of migrants has been growing ever since. An estimated 30 per cent of all inhabitants of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro live in Favelas.

Playground in Girassol

In the midst of such a district of the poor in Grajau the Girassol Children’s Home was founded in 1992.

Girassol is supposed to give the children of the poor a positive perspective for their future.
